The Day Everything Stopped

Last week, I T-boned a car going 55 MPH. Today, I got to pick up my personal belongings.

We were on our way to Target. I needed coconut milk, a hair product, and a birthday card. It was my mom’s birthday. Steven’s kids were in the vehicle with me. Sophia was with her dad.

We weren’t in any rush. The cruise was set, both hands on the wheel. I’m not sure the radio was even on. It was a beautiful day.

As we approached an intersection, I noticed a long line of cars waiting on both sides of county road 37. I thought to myself, “Wow, this is really backed up.” Then B-L-I-N-K. An Impala pulled out and was T-boned by a black RAV4 heading northbound, and we were the secondary crash, in this white RAV4, heading southbound.

You see it. You’re helpless. You hear it. You’re helpless. You feel it. You’re helpless. You wait for the car to stop moving before you realize you’re still breathing. All you see is white, gray and haze. You look over to check if the kids are okay. The kids are okay. You look down. Both legs look good. You see your arms. Your hands. You unbuckle and tell the kids it’s okay. You tell them to open their doors and get out. You feel your shoulders, your chest, your stomach. You’re okay. You crawl out the passenger door.

Outside, you step into something you’ve only seen in the movies. Broken. Mangled. Blood. A teenager. A little girl. And a little boy, shirtless in black shorts, who was lying lifeless on the ground.

Then the sirens. State Trooper. Police cars. Fire truck. Ambulance 1. Ambulance 2. Ambulance 3.

Life is precious, folks.

You think something is a big deal—until it’s not.

You worry about a zit on your face or a bad haircut—it doesn’t matter.

You think you have to have material things to be happy—you don’t.

Are you able to sit, stand, eat, and breathe? Then you are more than blessed, Friends. More than blessed.

Along with retrieving my personal belongings, I also left with a whole new meaning to the word, grateful.
